Julie Sablar   |   Director of Social Media

Social media never sleeps. The changes just keep coming, especially this month. Today’s preferred channels are subject to evolving features, statistics, designs, algorithms, and advertising on a near-constant basis. More than ever, social media channels are stepping up to support people finding themselves in new and uncertain circumstances. We've been keeping an eye on how the major channels have quickly adapted to support people, workers, and families to stay connected and accurately informed during the COVID-19 crisis.

Social Helps Connect Audiences & Strengthen Brands During Global Crisis

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began in January, Instagram has taken steps to help people access accurate information, prioritize health, and stay connected. These updates include:

  • More educational resources in Instagram Search that connect users to resources from the World Health Organization and local health ministries
  • Adding stickers to promote and share accurate information in Stories. These new features include reminders to wash your hands, distance yourself from others, and more
  • Removing COVID-19 accounts from recommendations, unless posted by a credible health organization
  • Rolling out the donation sticker in more countries and helping people find relevant nonprofits to support
  • Creating a shared story to help those practicing social distancing connect with others, using a "Stay Home" sticker
  • Launching a new way to browse Instagram with friends over video chat called Co-Watching

Instagram is making weekly updates to their platform to help users have the best experience possible during this difficult and isolating time. Keep up to date with their updates here.

Chipotle Provides Virtual Lunch

In-person hangouts have been suspended based on social distancing mandates, so Chipotle is providing a way to hang out virtually for 3,000 fans. They are hosting digital lunch parties, called Chipotle Together, via the video-conference app Zoom. The parties feature celebrity guests, Q&As, and free burrito giveaways. Fans can find the Zoom meeting links from Chipotle's Twitter account.

Updates for Grabs

Finally, there are several channel updates to put on your radar.
